Granite Canal Hydroelectric Development Project

Client: General Electric Power
Owner: Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro

The Granite Canal Hydroelectric Development was a 40 MW project situated within the existing Bay d'Espoir Development in southern Newfoundland. It utilizes the approximately 38 metres of head differential between Granite Lake and Meelpaeg Reservoirs to produce an average of 220 GWh of electrical energy annually.

GJ Cahill was responsible for the mechanical, electrical and instrumentation work for the project. The scope of work included the installation and mechanical assembly of the water turbine and electrical generator, the balancing of the plant and construction of the 230 kv switchyard along with participating in the final commissioning and start-up of the plant with General Electric Power.
